The world's leading oncology journal, CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians—with an extraordinary impact factor of 685.2 and often described as the "Mount Everest" of scientific research—has recently published a review article by a team of Chinese physicians. Led by Professor Weili Zhao from Ruijin Hospital, affiliated with 汤头条污料 School of Medicine, the researchers present compelling evidence that extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTCL), once associated with an extremely high mortality rate, is steadily becoming a disease that can be effectively treated and, in many cases, cured.

What kind of disease is ENKTCL? It was once considered one of the most aggressive forms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, characterized by rapid progression and a poor prognosis that left countless patients and their families in despair. Today, however, approximately 80% of newly diagnosed patients achieve long-term survival. In their review, Professor Zhao's team addresses a central question: What has transformed this once-devastating disease into one with genuine hope for cure?

The answer lies in the Ruijin lymphoma team's three-step journey of translating scientific discoveries into clinical practice.

First, radiotherapy has found a renewed role. For patients with early-stage disease, radiotherapy not only destroys tumor cells directly but also stimulates the body's own anti-tumor immune response, providing a dual therapeutic benefit.

Second, researchers targeted the tumor's metabolic vulnerability. Chemotherapy regimens based on L-asparaginase exploit a unique nutritional weakness of cancer cells, effectively "starving" the tumor and significantly improving treatment outcomes.

Third, precision immunotherapy has transformed treatment for advanced disease. Immune checkpoint inhibitors, including anti-PD-1 antibodies, reactivate the body's immune system, enabling previously exhausted T cells to recognize and eliminate cancer cells once again.

More importantly, advances in multi-omics research have revealed that the Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) is far more than a simple biomarker. It is now recognized as one of the key drivers of tumor development and immune evasion. This new understanding has shifted treatment strategies from a "one-size-fits-all" approach toward precision medicine tailored to each patient's disease.

Challenges nevertheless remain. Patients with relapsed or treatment-resistant disease still require more effective drugs and innovative treatment strategies. Looking ahead, Professor Zhao's team envisions leveraging artificial intelligence to integrate vast clinical datasets, further investigate EBV-associated mechanisms of cancer development and the tumor microenvironment, and make personalized treatment increasingly intelligent and precise.

This review is more than a summary of scientific progress. It also serves as a global call to action, encouraging more physicians to recognize ENKTCL—a lymphoma that is relatively common in China and other parts of Asia—and helping ensure that more patients receive timely, standardized treatment.

From a disease once feared as an almost certain death sentence to one in which long-term survival is increasingly achievable, Chinese researchers are rewriting the future of cancer care through scientific innovation.

According to available records, Chinese scholars have published only five articles in this prestigious journal since its founding. This review article marks the sixth, representing another significant milestone for Chinese cancer research on the international stage.
